Cancer is often considered as a single disease, but in actual sense it is a multiple disease. No clear-cut reason is found yet for the development of cancer, that is no ultimate cause for cancers is yet unknown medically. By the long and thorough studies, we can understand the characteristic features of cancer. Recently medical scientists have found that some genes that function normally are transformed into cancer-forming genes named as oncogenes. Oncogenes means cancer-creating genes. After the discovery of oncogenes, the research studies towards the treatment of cancers is going on the right way. It opened the insight towards how to prevent cancer, how to detect cancer, and the diagnosis and treatment of cancers. The main reason for transformation of normal genes into oncogenes is suppressor genes. These changes in the biological process of the body can be traced by way of a blood test in persons and this test will clarify whether a particular cancer-creating organisms present in the body or not. If any cancer-forming genes are present in the blood, by which identification, physicians can guess the way of spread of cancer present. By this examination, doctors can assume what type of visual examinations to be done to screen the cancer and the treatment plan for it. The testing processes for cancer-forming genes are developed in the recent days in the medical field and effective new methods are used for all people.
It is estimated that there are approximately hundred thousands of genes in the body and in these only a few genes are effectively controlling the development process of cells and cell division process. It is found that all the cells actually carry some oncogenes, even though they are not in the active state and being inactive state even throughout our lifetime. If these inactive genes are prone to be active by any of the chemical substances contact, these inactive genes get activated and may become cancer-creating cells. In biological science, the genetic material inside the nucleus of the cell gets transformed and changed because of the contact of the external cancer-creating agents and so the genetic materials convert the cell into a cancer-creating cell effectively.
It is discovered that some viruses can act as cancer-creating agents and duplicate their DNA part inside the DNA of a healthy cell. This process is called mutation. Any foreign material or chemical agent can induce the cancer and these agents are called carcinogens. These variety of cancer factors are called as initiators, promoters, and other miscellaneous factors. For example, exposure to x-rays can act as a cancer stimulant in some cases for blood cancer or leukemia. Chronic tobacco use is the cause of throat cancer and lung cancer.
