Apart from specific and nonspecific blood tests, such as SGOT, SGPT and CEA and CA-125, there are other kind of important blood test for cancer detection. The name of this test is tumor markers. In tumor markers, the test is taken to check the chemical substances called tumor markers. When a patient is affected
with cancerous tumor, he or she will be with tumor markers in their blood, as they are produced by these tumors. For example, CEA or carcinoembryonic antigen is a protein material produced by the patients with lung, intestines, and breast cancers. Some patients may get these chemicals even without any cancer,
such as, when they are getting any inflammatory diseases too, but only in tiny levels. Though cancer patients have high level of these chemicals in their blood. High level of carcinoembryonic antigen in a blood test, then the presence of cancer is confirmed. In tumor marker tests, it is found not only in the proteins, but also in the hormones, receptors, or also in the enzymes.
Different types of cancers may have different chemicals in the blood. Tumor markers may found not only in blood, but also in urine and also can be found in biopsy tests too in body tissues. Anyhow, all tumor marker tests are helpful in detecting cancers. Some patients after successful treatment, when checked for
blood for these tumor may get the presence of tumor markers, and so it is understood that the cancer is relapsed. CA-125 or carbohydrate antigen will be in the elevated condition if the patient has any benign tumors.
Other blood tests may also reveal cancer in the blood cells too. If any patient has high count of white blood cells in her or his blood, then it may be considered that he or she may have leukemia. Blood samples can be taken primarily from the fingers, but the suspicion of cancer in the blood is confirmed only after testing the sample from the bone marrow of the patient. The presence of multiple myeloma in a person can be confirmed by a test called bone marrow analysis. Multiple myeloma is abnormal condition of presence of malignancy in the blood cells in the marrow, especially in the plasma cells.
